Latino Artists Nominated for Top Music Honors in 2010

by Alessandra Alma

It's the start of the New Year, and you know what that means: music awards season! In the next coming months, the Latin Music world will be graced with The Grammy Awards, Primero lo Nuestro and the Latin Billboard Awards. So who are the top nominated artists?

The Grammy Awards

In addition to the Latin Grammys, the "regular" Grammys are also a monumental event for Latino artists. The Latin category was started in 1976 and over the years has expanded to include several subcategories, such as Latin Pop, Latin Rock, Tropical, and Mexican/Tejano. While they are not as inclusive as the Latin Grammys, the Grammys still honor many Latino artists. In order to be nominated for a Grammy however, recordings must be released in the United States, which limits many other talented and noteworthy artists. Nonetheless, a Grammy nomination is still an honor and a milestone for Latino artists. Some of the nominees this year are: Ricardo Arjona, La Quinta Estacion, Paulina Rubio, Wisin Y Yandel, Luis Enrique and all-time favorites Calle 13. The Grammy Awards will air on January 31 on CBS.

Premio Lo Nuestro

Premio Lo Nuestro can be considered the Latino version of the American Music Awards, where the fans get to choose the winner. Since 1989, this awards show has honored talented artists in Latin America and the United States. There are six major categories. Top nominees are Aventura with seven nominations and Wisin Y Yandel with five. In the Pop category, the top nominees are Ricardo Arjona, La Quinta Estacion, Fanny Lu, Nelly Furtado, Luis Fonsi and Paulina Rubio. Beto Cuevas is the top nominee in the Rock category. Luis Enrique continues his comeback success with several nominations in the Tropical category. Banda superstar Espinoza Paz garnered three nominations in the Regional Mexican category, including Best Male Artist and Best Banda Artist. But the shocker of all the nominations comes in the Urban category, with top nods going to Daddy Yankee, Wisin Y Yandel and Tito El Bambino; Calle 13 is not even nominated! However, It wouldn't be a Latino awards show without Calle 13 nominations and they have two: Best Video category, for "La Perla" and "Nadie Como Tu", where they are up against Shakira's "Lobo," Luis Fonsi's "Aqui Estoy Yo," and Aventura's "All Up to You." The winners will be announced on February 18th on Univision.

Latin Billboard Awards

For twenty years the Latin Billboard Awards has honored many of the chart topping Latino Artists in the music industry. This year, the Latin Billboard Awards will take place in Puerto Rico for the first time ever. They were previously held in Miami. So why the move to Puerto Rico? Out of the 17 artists who reached No. 1 on the Top Latin Album charts, nearly a third are Puerto Rican. The show will also be sponsored by Telemundo, which originated in Puerto Rico, making the island the perfect location. Nominees for the Latin Billboard Awards will be announced in mid February. But if any of the previous award shows are an indication, you can bet Aventura, Luis Fonsi, Beto Cuevas, Luis Enrique, La Quinta Estacion, Calle 13 and Wisin Y Yandel will be top nominees. The Latin Billboard Awards air on April 29th on Telemundo. And best of all, My Latino Voice is a media sponsor of the Latin Billboard Awards this year, so stay tuned for more coverage in the road to "La Isla del Encanto!"
