I like to think that the recession isn't hurting our celebs (if they can't spend money like it grows on trees, who can?), but sadly, at least one big star—Daddy Yankee—seems to be tightening his wallet.
The reggaeton A-lister just announced a U.S. tour in support of his latest album, Talento del Barrio, and by all appearances, it's a majorly scaled down affair. He'll kick things off at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City on April 13 and play at intimate theaters like Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., Roseland Ballroom in New York City and the James L. Knight Center in Miami before it all wraps up on April 4. That's a far cry from Yankee's Big Boss tour in 2007, when he made stops at high-profile arenas and stadiums (Madison Square Garden, American Airlines Arena, etc.). What gives?
Well, huge stars do sometimes like to take a step back and play smaller shows to get up close and personal with their fans again, and I can appreciate that. I've never been a fan of seeing artists put on circus-like concerts in supersized venues; even Kanye West's Glow in the Dark tour felt too overcooked for my taste. In fact, I'm much more eager to see Yankee live now that I know my best view of the show won't come from a Jumbotron.
But Daddy Yankee's shrunken tour can also be chalked up to a simple matter of supply and demand. We heard his Madison Square Garden show in September 2007 was not well-attended, and even Wisin y Yandel told Latina that they weren't jealous of the turnout. "Bendito, I wouldn't want that to happen to us," said Wisin at the time. "God bless him. May he keep pushing forward and fill 10 more venues.
Looks like El Cangrí learned his lesson about the importance of cutbacks, and hopefully he will sell out these venues as a result.
