Latin rapper Daddy Yankee helped kick-off the Republican National Convention (RNC) last night in Minnesota with a fund-raiser performance to aid Gulf relief victims.

According to the Boston Herald, the Grammy Award-winning artist headlined the “Fiesta Americana” concert last night (September 1) in St. Paul to support John McCain, the party’s presidential nominee.

In helping aid victims of recent destructive storms like Hurricane Gustav, the rapper explained the event’s importance. “I know that there are a lot of people who would like to do what they can for those who will be in need of assistance in the upcoming days and weeks,” he said in a statement. “My heart goes out to all those who have been affect in the Gulf Coast, as well as those in the Caribbean islands. It’s important for everyone to pitch in, and I’m proud to be involved in this effort to provide aid.”

The event's proceeds went directly towards the Red Cross Relief Fund.

In related news, Yankee has recently received some backlash from the hip-hop community-- most notably fellow Puerto Rican rapper Fat Joe--after speaking publicly co-signing the Republican candidate. “I believe in [John McCain's] ideals and his proposals to lead this nation," Yankee said. "He's been a fighter for the Hispanic community."
